The Tale of Three Films
The Hope Rekindles
The golden era of Hindifilms is about to stage a comeback. The failure of 'Yaadein' andthe successof 'Dil Chahta Hai' and 'Lagaan' is the pointer to this fact.It is directors like Ghai who were responsible for lowering of standards incommercial Hindi cinema. Some film journos would compare Ghai with Raj Kapoor. One would really get pissed off by this. How could you compare Sangam, MeraNaam Joker, Bobby, and a host of other RK films with third rated directorialofferings like Khalnayak, Pardes, Taal, and Yaadein? Some of the films fromRK banner may have failed at the box office but they were far better thanwhat a mediocre Ghai kept churning out with freak commercial successes. And Ghai is history now. He should better be counting all that money that he gets in sponsorship deals and leave the art of filmmaking to the new crop of filmmakers who know how to write a script and then convert it into a good film. The commercial success of 'Lagaan' and'Dil Chahata Hai' signifies the triumph of true and inspired film making. It has also reaffirmed the fact that a director is more than someone whok nowshow to create a story around some item songs.
Very soon we shall have writers and directors who would draw upon their own indigenous experiences and sensibilities and create world class films with original Indian ideas.
We can now be hopeful about the futureof Indian films. Khullamkhulla welcomes the emergence of brave and smart filmmakers and storytellers of Farhan and Ashutosh kind.
PS
It seems that 'Dil Chahata Hai' has not been doing so well in many centers. It should hardly matter. It is a better made filmby a first time director. It is not a 'self obsessed' fake film likewhatBenegal, Nihlani, and some of the so called art film makers have beenchurning out. So, there is nothing to be worried about. Great times are ahead.Indian films are going to conquer the world as Hollywood has been turningout stinking rotten stuff since the last few years. I am not talking aboutexceptions.
