Tehzeeb is a bad film
Khalid Mohamed got some 'Muft Ka Maal' and with the help of his close buddies like Santosh Shivan and Rahman made a film called Tehzeeb.
The name of the film suggested as if the film was about culture and etiquette. It turned out to be the name of the heroine. Khalid declares that the film is inspired by Ingmar Bergman. Those who do not know about Bergman will certainly form a very bad opinion about the legendary film maker after watching Khalid's caricature of a masterpiece.
The disjointed script of the film does not give much scope to a fine actress like Shabana to work out her character's graph convincingly. Urmila's laboured act, as usual, does not prove helpful either. Ridiculously obvious attempts to insert item numbers every now and then, bug the viewers so much that they walk out of the hall in sheer disgust. Watching passing cars on the highway could be more entertaining.
The film neither moves your heart nor your crotch nor your intellect.
It is disappointing in every department. The great Rahman is a total failure. The background music has too much of 'bang bang' theme woven into it. The cinematography consists of the usual nice lighting, and compositions poorly copied from the advertising and art magazines. Art direction follows the same strategy. Even the songs are disappointing.
Aasha Bhonsle's shrill rendering of songs picturised on Urmila is getting on people's nerves now. They are very irritating. One cannot say if these songs do more damage to the reputation of the singer or the actress. They really put you off instead of turning you on.
The plot of the film does not really give strong enough motivation to the characters to behave in a way they behave. That is why everything seems false and fabricated. Shabana, who has the capacity to carry a film alone on her strong shoulders, is wasted as an actress. She should not be doing favours to fools like Khalid who do not seem to have any desire to improve their skills as film makers and survive because of the hype and because they are good company. 'You scratch my back and I will scratch yours' attitude will ultimately destroy the art and craft of film making it seems.Diana Hayden-Rampal track is redundant. It was not needed. It is clear that the director and the scriptwriter had no faith in his story otherwise he would have worked more on mother daughter relationship and spent more footage on this central theme. His explorations would have given him many more dramatic moments that could have worked beautifully with the audiences.
Tehzeeb is sheer waste of precious money and first class talent that could have been invested in a really good film that might have achieved commercial success as well as critical acclaim.
It was a Friday, the first day of the release of the film and there were hardly 100 persons in the hall. By the time the film ended, the number had come down to fifty. Such was the impact of the film. All that 'bang bang' background music and item numbers failed to impress the audiences.
