Film India Worldwide
MFF’s Select Seven: India and the World
Over the years, there has been a regular MAMI sidebar devoted to a
growing body of films rooted in India but
international in its players, makers, content, locations and target
audiences. This is its “Film India Worldwide” (FIW) section. It
searches the globe for this special kind of film.
In MAMI 2009, FIW presents seven screenings, all premieres of one kind
or other. The directors or producers are of Indian origin, settled
elsewhere and looking “homewards.” There are also films made by
international directors turning to India for creative stimulus.
Collectively, they represent a fusion of world talent and Indian
inspiration. They provide a fascinating take on an immigrant world,
with its particular cross-cultural lifestyles and preoccupations.
The FIW film package at MAMI, held in India ’s film capital, is enjoyed
as cinema that is an extension of the homeland. The genre is gaining
distribution in India , and here MAMI offers an invaluable show window
for distribution and sales. Of the select seven at FIW this year, one
is a world premiere, two are international premieres (films so far
screened only in their country of origin), three are Asian premieres
and one is an India premiere. Enjoy!
