9th International Film Festival, Mumbai(IFFM) to open with Zhang Yimou’s 'Curse of the Golden Flower'

Adlabs Films Ltd. will be presenting the festival that will be organised by Mumbai Academy of the Moving  Image (MAMI).
 

The festival will be dedicated to the memory of the late Hrishikesh Mukherjee. He was the founder chairman of MAMI.

A number of awards will be given away during the opening ceremony on 8th March, 2007, to be held at the Chavan Centre. Amitabh Bachhan will be given a special award as a salute to his being the Indian Cinema’s Global Icon.  Javed Akhtar gets the Lifetime Achievement Award. Veteran music director Pyare Lal will be given away the Outstanding Contribution to Indian Film Music Award.

Aparna Sen gets the award for Significant Contribution to Cinema over 25 Years and Govind Nihalani will be getting the Kodak Award for Technical Excellence in the closing ceremony on 15th March, 2007.

There will be two awards for Indian films- the Best Indian Film and the FIPRESCI awards.

More than 128 films from all over the world are scheduled for screenings. Imax Adlabs, Wadala, will be the main venue of the festival. Other two venues are the Chavan Centre and the Fun Republic that will have one screen each.

Delegates’ Registration process has already begun at these venues except the Fun Republic. You can register between 1 and 7 PM everyday. It is free but you have to pay for the festival catalogue mandatorily. Carry your passport size photographs and Rs.500/- with you while going for the registration. If you are a member of any of the film bodies like the Writers' Association, IMPAA, AMPTPP, Guild, IFDA, etc. you need to pay Rs.300/- only.

Among the known and the unknown films to be shown in the festival are Volver by Pedro Almodovar, Vanaja by Rajnesh Domalpalli,Marie Antoinnette by Sophia Coppola, Ralatives by Istvan Szabo, The Road by Zhang Jiarui, The Barbarian Invasions by Denys Arcand, and Flags of Our Fathers by Clint Eastwood.

The South African package has been included in the festival's programme as a special tribute on the cenetenary of Gandhi's Satyagrah movement. The idea was first tested on the South African soil successfully for political mass mobilisation and was later put to highly effective use in our struggle for freedom. These films have been produced by Anant Singh, an Indian.

A large number of filmmakers from India and abroad are participating and there will be a number of lectures, Q & A Sessions, conferences, and other interactive programmes during the festival.
